Crisis

Crisis

There are several definitions for the word, but let's focus on this one:
An unstable condition, as in political, social, or economic affairs, involving an impending abrupt or decisive change.
Pretty serious, right?
Now, let's look at all the "crises" in our world (in no particular order). I'm not making these up...these are phrases pulled from very recent news articles. Some are a lot alike and probably have the same meaning, but hear me out :
    Crises
  • Energy Crisis
  • Credit Crisis
  • Darfur Crisis
  • Housing Crisis
  • Oil Crisis
  • Education Crisis
  • Tibetan Crisis
  • Humanitarian Crisis
  • Environmental Crisis
  • HIV/AIDS Crisis
  • Georgian-Russian Crisis
  • Foreclosure Crisis
  • Deficit Crisis
  • Budget Crisis
  • Airline Crisis
  • Loan Crisis
  • Iran-Nuclear Crisis
  • Midlife Crisis
  • Global Food Crisis
  • North Korean-Nuclear Crisis
  • Hunger Crisis
  • Heath Crisis
  • Heath Care Crisis
  • Israeli-Palestinian Crisis
  • Immigration Crisis
  • Prison Abuse Crisis
  • Mortgage Crisis
  • Election Crisis
  • Fiscal Crisis
  • Marriage Crisis
  • Subprime Crisis
  • Agriculture Crisis
  • Ethanol Crisis
  • U.S. Crisis
  • Afghanistan Crisis
  • Security Crisis
  • Guantanamo Crisis
  • Liquidity Crisis
  • Beijing Smog Crisis
  • Liquidity Crisis
  • Middle East Crisis
  • Iraq Crisis
...I think that is quite enough.

Here's my point. By definition it seems that about half of these are more accurately described as PROBLEMS and not crises. Why is "crisis" overused? If an "impending abrupt or decisive change" is needed during a crisis, then why do we have SO MANY CRISES???
Ah ha! why? The answer: Leadership. Poor leadership, that is. Worldwide, nationally, regionally, locally, personally.
It's the boy who cried wolf. I'm numb to the next crisis to arise. What about you? What the fuck is a "liquidity crisis"? Let's quit accepting new crises into our world. Let's fix the things that are actually problems and allow decisive change to help resolve the crises. It's all about leadership. I'll leave it at that.

Sports and the real Media focus

Tomorrow the summer Olympics begin and we will be exposed to hundreds of hours of sports coverage. Over the next two weeks, little attention will be given to the Presidential campaigns.

The recent re-authorization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) by Congress - with the support of both Senators Barack Obama and John McCain - is something that you know is a major threat.

Even as privacy and free speech advocates are criticizing the Chinese government for its efforts to spy on their people, little is said about FISA and how our government can and will spy on American citizens.

Bob's opponents will likely be laying low in the next two weeks as all eyes follow what's going on in Beijing. American should be aware that when it comes to civil liberties and privacy, there is no real difference between Obama and McCain.

Twilight is the best time of the day

As I sit and listen to the sounds of winter winding down and the snow melting from my rooftop, I reflect on the last few months and two seasons we spent recording our debut EP. Tracking drums and bass began early October in the Chapel and that room really shines on the tracks. Major label producers pay big money to have access to this type of "room" sound...and as the drummer/co-producer it's extra special. We recorded some of the guitars at the chapel but mostly at my apartment, and the bass was tracked at Mike's apartment. It's amazing what people are able to do now days with the tech of digital recording. A hard drive, a MacBook, a Digi002, some decent mics, and a lot of patience and desire got us some amazing tracks using no digital plug-ins. We went to the expert in Dustin Burnett (http://www.plumemedia.com) to track the vocals with a Charter Oak mic into a spectacular signal chain. We left the tracks with him for mixing and then they found their way to New Zealand where they were mastered.
Twilight is the album. Six tracks of methodical planning and writing/recording. Four guys, all imagining music and creating what we imagine with our hands into our instruments; the sound created is captured by technology and played back into the own ears of the guys who imagined it all to begin with. A record that feels like the sound has no boundary, an endless expanse of glorious sound.
We are very proud of this upcoming release. We believe in what we're doing and we believe you will take the album to heart.
